A man believed to be in his 30s was found hanging from a tree with a rope around his neck in a Haitian shantytown off Carmichael Road early Saturday, police said.
Police received a call about the apparent suicide shortly after 8 a.m.
There was no known motive for the incident.
Police were, however, asked at the scene whether they fear the current economic crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic would result in more suicides.
Superintendent Shanta Knowles responded: “While there are possibilities that more of these incidents can occur, we are hoping and praying that they don’t, but we also want to encourage residents to be their brother’s keepers.
“If they see something unusual with their neighbor, their brother, seek help for that person, help them in any way possible, of course while we are locked down and obeying the curfew. We expect that we will all be our brother’s keeper in times like these.”
The coroner has been informed about the matter and an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, Knowles said.
