A number of businesses including hardware and home stores, auto part stores, plant nurseries and landscaping and property maintenance operations will be allowed to operate during the 24-hour curfew, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis announced on Sunday afternoon.
This announcement comes one month after Minnis ordered businesses to suspend operations in an effort to fight COVID-19.
Auto part stores will be allowed to open on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hardware and home stores will be allowed to open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Plant nurseries will be allowed to operate on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 a.m. to noon.
Landscaping and property maintenance will now fall under essential businesses and will be allowed to operate on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Minnis said as with other business, physical distancing must be adhered to.
Minnis also announced that construction on Family Islands will be allowed to resume. However, he noted that construction workers will have to wear face masks.
He said hardware, lumber, plumbing that cater to construction will be allowed to open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Family Islands borders will remain closed.
The 24-hour curfew goes back into effect on Monday at 5 a.m. The lockdown will take effect on Friday at 9 p.m.
Minnis said the government is “carefully” considering opening other areas of the economy. However, Minnis said the pace will depend on the cooperation of the public in following the health guidelines.
To date there are 60 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Bahamas – 51 on New Providence, 7 on Grand Bahama, one on Bimini and one on Cat Cay.
