The Ministry of Health yesterday announced five new cases of COVID-19 in The Bahamas, including a couple from Bimini, bringing the total number of cases to 70.
Minister of Health Dr. Duane Sands said one of the new cases is tied to a medical-surgical ward at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), where an asymptomatic patient tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.
Three of the new cases are on New Providence. As noted, two are on Bimini.
The two cases on Bimini are a 63-year-old woman who is at a government quarantine facility and a 78-year-old man who is in isolation at home.
Officials say the two cases on Bimini are not connected to that island’s first case, Kim Johnson-Rolle, who died due to the virus last month.
The cases on New Providence include a 65-year-old man who was hospitalized, a 28-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man. The latter two are isolated at home.
As noted, the new cases on Bimini come after Johnson-Rolle, a resident of the island, died due to COVID-19 last month.
Johnson-Rolle went to the local clinic with flu-like symptoms and trouble breathing, her family said.
Compounding the issue, it took 24 hours for officials to get her airlifted to New Providence.
Health officials then asked residents on the island, particular Johnson-Rolle’s family, to self-isolate.
As of yesterday, 792 people in the country were in quarantine.
The Ministry of Health urged patients told to quarantine to do as instructed.
“The Ministry of Health again wishes to remind individuals who have been advised to remain home in quarantine or isolation that they are expected to stay in their homes until the time of quarantine or isolation has ended,” it said.
Sands said roughly 100 health care workers were in quarantine in relation to the incident at PMH. Several doctors have expressed concern over a shortage of health care workers in the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nine people have died from COVID-19 in The Bahamas.
