Parker-Edgecombe named minister of state for disaster preparedness

West Grand Bahama and Bimini MP Pakesia Parker-Edgecombe will serve as minister of state for disaster preparedness, management and reconstruction, replacing Iram Lewis, who was last week appointed minister of youth, sports and culture.

Parker-Edgecombe will be the only woman in Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis’ Cabinet following the resignation of Seabreeze MP Lanisha Rolle last week.

“…The prime minister has advised his excellency the governor general to appoint Mrs. Pakesia Parker-Edgecombe…as minister of state for disaster preparedness, management and reconstruction in the Office of the Prime Minister with effect from her taking oath of office,” the Cabinet Office said in a statement yesterday.

Parker-Edgecombe served as parliamentary secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for information and communications.

She said yesterday, she is looking forward to working in her new role.

“I am humbled by this appointment and opportunity to further represent my community and overall country,” she said.

“I look forward to working with the established team to carry out this government’s mandate.”

Rolle’s resignation from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture last week spurred the Cabinet reshuffle.

She did not give a reason in her resignation letter to the governor general and declined to provide any reason when questioned on the matter earlier this week.

Hours after Rolle’s resignation letter surfaced, the Cabinet Office released a statement formally announcing the resignation and added, “Certain matters have been brought to the attention of the prime minister and are under investigation.”

However, the parameters of the investigation were not specified.

On Thursday, when asked whether the former minister was directly connected to an investigation or whether she is being investigated, Minnis told reporters, “No, she is not.”

In the immediate aftermath of Rolle’s resignation, several people expressed concern over there being no women in Minnis’ Cabinet.
