Simms attain doubles ranking; others pick up wins

Bahamian Abigail Simms and the Indiana Tech Warriors women’s tennis team remained undefeated in the Wolverine-Hosier Athletic Conference (WHAC), taking down Aquinas College on Friday and Spring Arbor University on Tuesday.

Against Aquinas, sophomore player Simms won in doubles following a tough singles loss, 7-6(10-5) and 6-4, to sophomore player Sofia Gomez. In doubles, she teamed up with Isidora Hrnjak and they won a tiebreak battle, 10-5, over the team of Gomez and Joska Volder.

The duo of Simms and Hrnjak was featured in the Oracle ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Women’s NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Rankings, both nationally and regionally. Simms and Hrnjak earned a number 21 ranking in the nation for doubles after a 6-1 win/loss this season at the number one position for the Warriors. Simms previously attained a ranking nationally in singles.

On Tuesday, Simms won in both singles and doubles. In singles she defeated junior Sela Clifford, 6-3 and 6-1, and in doubles she and new partner Martina Borges defeated the team of Paige Trela and Emma Ruga, 6-2.

The Warriors now have a 10-1 overall win/loss record this season, 2-0 in the WHAC.

Sierra Donaldson posted two wins to help Lee University women’s tennis team with a 7-0 shutout over Shorter University on Friday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center in Cleveland, Tennessee.

In singles, Donaldson blanked Mary Ella Owen, a freshman, 6-0 and 6-0. In doubles, Donaldson teamed up with Carley Sickinger and they defeated the team of Emma Novis and Alana Mulkey, 6-2 at the third position.

On Sunday, Donaldson lost in both singles and doubles as the Lee University Lady Flames fell to the University of West Alabama, 7-0.

In singles, Donaldson lost to junior Valeria Arevalo, 6-1 and 6-1. In doubles, Donaldson and Sickinger lost to Arevalo and Morgan Bishop, 6-3.

Bahamian Sydney Clarke and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Blazers had their six-match winning streak come to an end on Friday afternoon after dropping a 4-2 decision to Southern Mississippi.

Clarke, a freshman, played in the number four singles slot and lost to Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, a junior, 7-6 and 6-4. In doubles, she teamed up with Jana Hecking and they fell to Yazgan and Sarah Medik, 6-3.

On Saturday, Clarke helped the Blazers record a 4-2 win over Louisiana Tech.

In singles, Clarke won over Alexia Romero, a sophomore, 7-6 and 6-3. In doubles, she and Hecking defeated the team of Anastasiia Salenko and Madalena Amil, 6-4.

The Blazers improve their record to 9-6 and will play Western Kentucky University (WKU) on Saturday, March 27.

Lauryn Daxon, a senior, and the Missouri Valley College Vikings won their last two matchups, against John Brown University and Evangel University, and improved to 6-2 on the season. The Vikings are currently ranked at number 24 nationally. They will face Grand View University on Friday, March 26.

Iesha Shepherd, a senior, and the Jackson State Lady Tigers prevailed 4-3 over Mississippi College on Thursday, and on Saturday, they earned their fourth sweep of the season, defeating Alabama A&M by a final score of 4-0. The Lady Tigers improved to 7-3 overall, 5-1 in their conference.

Hannah-Joy Simms, a junior, and the Brescia Bearcats have lost five straight matchups to start their season. In their last two matchups, they fell to Indiana University Kokomo, 6-1, and to Indiana University Southeast, 7-0.

Against Indiana University Kokomo, Simms had their only win, prevailing in straight sets, 6-1 and 7-5, over freshman player Gabbie Orlando.

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) congratulates all of the Bahamian collegiate tennis players for great performances in their most recent outings.
