Bahamian collegiate swimmers DaVante Carey and Lamar Taylor will be in action at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Swimming and Diving Championships set for March 17-20 at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Carey swims for the McKendree University Bearcats and Taylor for the Henderson State University Reddies. Both will be swimming in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke events. Taylor also has the 100-yard freestyle event.
The two are no strangers to big meets as both swam at the CARIFTA level with Carey also representing The Bahamas at the 2019 Pan American Games and Taylor representing The Bahamas at the 2019 FINA (International Swimming Federation) World Junior Swimming Championships.
For Carey, it was a huge feat for the Bearcats sophomore to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships. He missed a significant chunk of the already shortened season with an injury. In the 50-yard free, Carey’s seed time is 20.69 seconds, receiving an NCAA invitation with the 39th fastest time. He did not need an
invitation to swim in the 100-yard back as he heads into the meet as the seventh-fastest swimmer with a seed time of 47.57 seconds.
Taylor enters the 50-yard free with the 10th fastest time – 19.86 seconds. In the 100-yard, Taylor has a seed time of 49.20 seconds. He will have a lot of ground to cover as he enters that event with the slowest time of the field of swimmers at number 30. For his final race, the 100-yard free, the freshman has a seed time of 44.46 seconds, good enough for the 24th fastest time at the meet.
The 100-yard free is set for Wednesday. Both Carey and Taylor have Thursday off, but return to the pool on Friday to swim in the 100-yard back. On the final day, Taylor will swim in the 100-yard free race. All races will be preliminaries and held in the mornings.
Unlike the just concluded NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships that had both divisions the same weekend, the swimming championships will have theirs on different weekends. The NCAA Division I Swimming and Division Championships is set for March 24-27 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Two Bahamians will be swimming in that meet – Lilly Higgs and Izaak Bastian. Higgs who swims for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, qualified in the 100-yard breast. Bastian swims for the Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles and qualified in the 100- and 200-yard breast races.
The 2020 editions were both canceled with the NCAA Division II meet being called off while Carey was about to go on the starting blocks for his race.
