Eleven members of the Democratic National Alliance, including DNA Leader Arinthia Komolafe and DNA Chairman Omar Smith, were taken into police custody after 9 a.m. today.
ASP Audley Peters told reporters that a matter was brought to the attention of police on March 3 that warranted an investigation.
As a result of that investigation, Komolafe was invited to Central Police Station, according to Peters.
He declined to say what Komolafe was brought in for questioning for, but noted that she and the other DNAs were being “very cooperative”.
DNA Vice Chairman Derek Smith described the move as political victimization after the DNA took to Bay Street three weeks ago to protest the emergency order and the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of 12:30 p.m., there were at least two dozen DNA supporters protesting outside Central Police Station in downtown Nassau.
Emmanuel Komolafe, the DNA leader’s husband, was also outside the police station.
He told The Nassau Guardian that Komolafe arrived at the station around 9:30 this morning for questioning.
According to Mr. Komolafe, a few minutes after her arrival, police brought Mrs. Komolafe and the other DNAs outside and said they were under arrest.
Mr. Komolafe said he believes this is politically motivated.
Englerston MP Glenys Hanna-Martin was also present at the protest.
She said she came to stand in solidarity with the DNAs who are in police custody.
Hanna-Martin said she is concerned by what is happening.
