Bahamian Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm continued to impress this spring, going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate yesterday and helping the Miami Marlins double up the Houston Astros, 4-2, at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter, Florida.
The Bahamian infielder, who is battling with fellow Marlins’ prospect Isan Díaz for the starting second baseman job on the team, is now hitting .250 with three home runs and five RBIs in Spring Training of Major League Baseball (MLB). He came on as a defensive substitution for Díaz in the top of the sixth, and a half inning later, Chisholm showed what he could do at the plate.
Chisholm lifted a 1-1 pitch, a 94.6 miles per hour (mph) four-seam fastball off Astros’ reliever Enoli Paredes over the right field fence for a two-run home-run, breaking a tie and giving the Marlins a 4-2 lead over the Astros. Two innings later, Chisholm added a bunt single, moving right fielder J.J. Bleday over to second base. Both runners were stranded but Ross Detwiler and Anthony Bass combined for a scoreless ninth to give the Marlins the victory – their ninth of Spring Training.
The Marlins, who were the Cinderella team in MLB a season ago, now have a 9-4 win/loss record in Spring Training this year – best in the majors. They have six more Spring Training games before the regular season gets underway. The Marlins welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to Marlins Park in Miami, Florida, for their home opener on Thursday, April 1, against, and will play them again that Friday and Saturday. Following that, they haver a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals, again in Miami.
As for Chisholm, the Bahamian professional baseball player now has seven hits in 28 at-bats this spring, has scored four runs and has one stolen base. He has a .300 one-base percentage (OBP) and a .871 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).
Chisholm’s home run yesterday was his second in his last four games and third of the spring. It had a 109mph exit velocity.
In the field, Chisholm has started seven games at second base and two at shortstop. He has a 1.000 fielding percentage at both, with 10 putouts and 16 assists at second base and one putout and three assists at shortstop. He has been a part of six double plays at second base this spring and one at shortstop.
Last season, Chisholm
batted .161 with two home runs and six RBIs in the regular season. He had five bases on balls, two stolen bases, scored eight runs and ended the season with a .242 OBP and a .563 OPS. Defensively, he was a gem as he had 25 putouts, 43 assists and just one error in 69 opportunities. He was a part of 13 double plays and had a fielding percentage of 1.000 at second base and .962 at shortstop.
Chisholm made an appearance in 24 games for the Marlins during the regular season, starting 11 games at second base and six at shortstop.
In the postseason, Chisholm had a hit in three at-bats to finish with a .333 batting average. He ended postseason play strong as he connected for a double in his last at-bat in what was his first and only postseason game.
In the game yesterday, Miami starter Trevor Rogers began with four hitless innings and struck out six, then allowed a bunt single and a homer by Jeremy Pena in the fifth. Zack Greinke gave up one earned run on five hits in four and a third innings for Houston. Rogers picked up the win while Astros’ reliever Paredes suffered the loss.
The Marlins host the Cardinals at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter at 1 p.m. today before going on the road to play the New York Mets on Tuesday. The game against the Mets is at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and will get underway at 1:10 p.m.
