Bahamian collegiate swimmers Lamar Taylor and DaVante Carey had a busy weekend, competing for their respective schools at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II (DII) Swimming and Diving Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
In the pool for the men’s 100-yard backstroke event, Taylor, a freshman for the Henderson State University Reddies, qualified for the ‘A’ final while Carey settled for a spot in the ‘B’ final.
In the ‘A’ final, Taylor touched the wall in seventh place, finishing in 47.29 seconds after swimming 47.50 seconds in the heats. He went out in 22.90 and came home in 24.39 to top his seed time by almost a full two seconds, earning All-American recognition while breaking his own school record in the process. He was seeded 28th overall – the lowest seed of any swimmer in the prelims.
In the ‘B’ final, Carey, a sophomore for the McKendree University Bearcats, swam 47.70 for third in that race and 11th overall. He swam 48.29 seconds in the prelims, significantly off his seed time of 47.57 seconds. Carey came into that event as the seventh-fastest swimmer in division two.
Taylor was back in the pool in the 100 free the following day and turned in a time of 44.11 seconds in the heats to reach the ‘B’ final. In the ‘B’ final, he swam 44.78 for eighth in that race and was 16th overall. The Bahamian junior swimmer came into that event with a seed time of 44.46, 23rd fastest in the field of 34 swimmers.
In addition to the bronze medal swim in the men’s 200 medley relay, Carey was a part of three other relay teams for the Bearcats.
He and the Bearcats men’s 400 medley relay team swam to a new school record in that event, clocking 3:09.84 for second. Carey’s teammates were Henrik Dahrendorff, a senior, Gregg Lichinsky, a junior, and Xander Skinner, a senior. Carey swam the lead-off backstroke leg for the team and touched the wall in 47.36 seconds.
Drury University won the gold in 3:08.66, McKendree was second, and Delta State University finished third in 3:10.67. McKendree went into that race with a seed time of 3:10.74.
In the men’s 200 free relay, Carey and the Bearcats finished ninth overall in 1:21.61. His teammates in that event were Filipe Pinheiro, a freshman, Dahrendorff and Fabio Dalu, a sophomore. The Bearcats came into that event with a seed time of 1:20.28.
In the men’s 400 free relay, Carey and his teammates finished seventh overall in 2:55.78. His teammates in that event were Lichinsky, Dalu and Skinner. The Bearcats went into that event with a seed time of 2:55.64.
The Bearcats were sixth in the 800 free relay in 6:33.38 after coming into that event with a seed time of 6:34.40. Carey’s teammates in that event were Skinner, Lichinsky and Dalu.
With Carey’s assistance, McKendree’s men’s team placed fourth overall despite only sending eight swimmers to the championships. They totaled 337 points.
Queens University of Charlotte won with 561 points, Drury was second with 531 points and the University of Indianapolis finished third with 369 points.
Taylor helped Henderson State to an 18th place finish – the program’s best result at the NCAA DII Championships since 2010 when the Reddies finished 15th. They scored 30 points overall.
The NCAA Division I Swimming and Division Championships is set for March 24-27 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. A couple of Bahamians will be swimming in that meet – Lilly Higgs and Izaak Bastian.
Higgs who swims for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, qualified in the 100-yard breast. Bastian swims for the Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles and qualified in the 100- and 200-yard breast races.
The 2020 editions were both canceled.
