Severe weather in Birmingham, Alabama, disrupted the first day of the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Swimming and Diving Championships, but action picked up on Thursday, and both Bahamians got in the pool at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
DaVante Carey, a sophomore for the McKendree University Bearcats, helped his team to a third-place finish overall in the men’s 200 medley relay. They swam a time of 1:25.67 after coming in with a seed time of 1:27.71. They won their heat and was third overall.
Carey swam the lead-off backstroke leg for the team, touching the wall on his stroke in 21.54 seconds. His teammates were Henrik Dahrendorff, a senior, Gregg Lichinsky, a junior, and Xander Skinner, a senior. Drury won the gold in an NCAA Division II record of 1:24.69, and the University of Indianapolis settled for the silver in 1:25.03.
Carey also swam in the 50-yard freestyle event and was third in his heat and 35th overall in 20.93 seconds. He came into that race with a seed time of 20.69 seconds.
Lamar Taylor, a freshman for the Henderson State University Reddies, also swam in the heats of the 50 free yesterday. He just missed out on the ‘B’ final for that event, completing the two lengths of the 25-yard pool in 20.08 seconds. Taylor, who came into that event with a seed time of 19.86 seconds, was placed in the fastest heat. He finished tied for seventh in his heat and was tied for 21st overall.
The final cut-off time for the ‘B’ final was 19.99 seconds and the cut-off time for the ‘A’ final was 19.87 seconds.
Carey was back in the pool last night, swimming in the men’s 200 free relay and the men’s 400 medley relay, but the results of those events were unavailable up to press time.
Both athletes will be back in the pool today, swimming in the heats of the 100-yard backstroke events. That is Carey’s best event as he heads into the heats as the seventh-fastest swimmer in division two with a seed time of 47.57 seconds. Taylor has a seed time of 49.20 seconds.
Taylor also has the 100-yard freestyle event, set for Saturday. He comes into that event with a seed time of 44.46 seconds, 23rd fastest in the field of 34 swimmers.
Carey missed a significant portion of the already shortened season with an injury and is looking to have a strong showing in his final individual event of the meet.
The NCAA Division I Swimming and Division Championships is set for March 24-27 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. A couple of Bahamians will be swimming in that meet – Lilly Higgs and Izaak Bastian.
Higgs who swims for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, qualified in the 100-yard breast. Bastian swims for the Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles and qualified in the 100- and 200-yard breast races.
The 2020 editions were both canceled.
