Five new COVID-19 deaths

The COVID-19 death toll has increased by five on Friday, according to the Ministry of Health.

Officials confirmed the deaths of a 58-year-old Long Island woman and a 71-year-old woman, a 54-year-old woman, a 67-year-old man, and a 20-year-old woman, all from New Providence. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 55. The deaths were recorded between August 14 and August 30.

Additionally, five more deaths are under investigation, bringing the total to 15.

The ministry also confirmed 90 additional cases of the virus — 63 on New Providence, 14 on Grand Bahama, six on Abaco, two on Inagua, two on Long Island, one on Eleuthera and two with locations that are still pending.

The total of 2,476 cases were confirmed since March.

The ministry said 76 cases remain hospitalized, 948 people recovered.

The ministry has also warned schools to follow health protocols.

“Some schools have already opened and others will be opening between September 7 and October 5, 2020,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Some students will return to face-to-face learning, while others will experience learning in a virtual setting. The Ministry Education in consultation with the Ministry of Health has proposed protocols to ensure the safety of faculty, students and staff when face to face instruction resumes.

“The purpose of these protocols is to provide school administrators with a guide to create a safe, physical environment.

“School administrators are encouraged to remind all students to practice the following basic principles: wear a clean face mask when leaving home; maintain a physical distance of a minimum of three feet, but when possible, six feet from others; wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and if soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 70 percent alcohol; and cover coughs or sneezes in your inner elbow with a tissue.”

School administrators were also reminded to disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
