The first equestrian team to travel out of the country under the Bahamian flag in over 30 years returned home with some top finishes from the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) International Invitational held at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, Georgia, on Saturday.
Representing the team were Mila Sands, Peyton Wong, Elle O’Brien, Maya Tilberg and Nicholas Astwood. The coach was Kimberley Johnson and Erika Adderley-Coello was the team’s trainer.
Sands was spectacular, as her performance granted her a week-long scholarship to a summer camp at Chatham Hall School in Chatham, Virginia.
She finished first in the Novice Equitation Over Fences. In the Novice Under Saddle, she was second.
Wong also took part in two events. She finished first in the Intermediate Equitation Under Saddle, and was third in the Intermediate Equitation Over Fences event.
Also taking a top spot for The Bahamas was Maya Tilberg. She was victorious in the Junior Varsity Beginner Equitation Walk, Trot, Canter.
Astwood was the only male on the team. He finished on top in the Junior Varsity Beginner Equitation Walk, Trot.
O’Brien finished sixth in the Open Equitation Over Fences.
Equestrian Bahamas (EB) President Catherine Ramsingh-Pierre said the success of the Bahamian riders in this event has resulted in the IEA, United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the Bahamas Interschool Equestrian League (BIEL) coming together to consider avenues to have a permanent collaboration, so that The Bahamas can participate in future competitions on a regular basis, and collectively, they can have a sustainable endeavor moving forward.
