After another strong performance, Tiffany Hanna reigns supreme among the women throws for the Wagner College Seahawks in New York, New York.
Competing at the 2020 Northeast Conference (NEC) Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island, Hanna turned in a pair of impressive throws which enabled her to be declared the NEC Most Outstanding Field Performer (Throws) – an honor she shared with Long Island University’s (LIU) senior Taylor Parker.
Hanna, a junior, won the weight throw competition, setting a massive new personal best and national record of 18.28 meters (m) – 59’ 11-3/4”. It was also a school record and is the number one throw in the conference this season by far. Finishing a distant second was Yessie Valencia, a junior at Robert Morris University, with a toss of 15.75m (51’ 8-1/4”); and coming in third was Estelle Katende, another junior at Robert Morris, with a toss of 15.27m (50’ 1-1/4”).
In the shot put event, Hanna was sixth with a toss of 12.69m (41’ 7-3/4”). Wining that event was Parker with a toss of 14.47m (47’ 5-3/4”). Finishing second was Katende with a toss of 13.39m (43’ 11-1/4”), and rounding out the top three was Gabrielle Eldridge, a senior at Merrimack College, with a throw of 12.83m (42’ 1-1/4”).
As for the weight throw, Hanna’s mark broke a long-standing national record of 17.07m (56’) that was set by Aymara Albury at the 7th New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York, in February of 2007.
Hanna is excelling in the throws while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average (GPA), making the Dean’s List for the Fall 2019 semester and is on track to do it again in the Spring of 2020.
She has been exceptional in the throws for the Seahawks all season, winning a number of medals and earning three NEC Field Athlete of the Week Awards.
Hanna’s performance at the NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend helped the Seahawks women’s indoor track and field team finish seventh overall with 55 points.
Fairleigh Dickinson University tallied 109 points to win the team title, Mount St. Mary University finished second with 97 and LIU was one point behind them in third with 96 points.
Hanna and the Seahawks are scheduled to compete at the Fast Track Last Chance Invite on Friday February 28. Following that, the Bahamian collegiate field athlete will head to the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Indoor Track & Field Championships, March 7-8, in Boston, Massachusetts. She will represent the Seahawks in the weight throw at that competition.
