Teens accused of trying to kill eldery man

Two teenagers yesterday admitted to trying to kill a 90-year-old man during an armed robbery when they appeared in court.

However, Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans could not accept the guilty pleas of Tyrone Neely, 18, and a 16-year-old, because the offenses can only be tried in the Supreme Court.

Prosecutors say the young men, while armed with a hammer, robbed Wilfred Beneby of $500 at a shop on Lincoln Boulevard and attempted to murder him on January 28, 2020.

Vogt-Evans told the unrepresented accused that they did not have to enter pleas to the charges and the case would be fast-tracked to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment on April 29.

That didn’t stop the youngest of two from saying, “I admit to what I do (sic) and I’m sorry for what I did.”

With tears streaming down his face, Neely, who turned 18 on January 5, said, “I’m guilty.”

Vogt-Evans said there was no process to expedite the case, despite their admissions.
