Bahamian Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm is certainly doing his part in hopes of making the Miami Marlins opening day roster.
Through three games in Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Spring Training Grapefruit League, Chisholm remains perfect at the plate, and the Marlins are following his lead as they are perfect through four games.
Chisholm drew two walks and scored a run in a 7-4 win for the Marlins over the scandal-ridden Houston Astros yesterday, and is 3-for-3 in spring training. His teammate Lewis Brinson, who won the Don’t Blink Home Run Derby at Montagu here in The Bahamas in early January, was a perfect 2-for-2 yesterday, including his first home-run of the spring.
As for Chisholm, he entered the game in the bottom of the fifth as a defensive replacement for starting shortstop Jon Berti. The 22-year-old number four prospect of the Marlins got to work immediately fielding a pop up off the bat of Astros catcher Dustin Garneau.
In the top of the seventh, Chisholm came up to bat with the score tied at four and drew a four-pitch walk. A couple of batters later, he was called out on a ground ball double play off the bat of first baseman Lewin Diaz.
The Marlins surged ahead, breaking a 4-4 tie with three runs in the top of the ninth inning, and the Bahamian shortstop was right in the mix.
A patient Chisholm drew another four-pitch walk and came home on a three-run shot from designated hitter Jerar Encarnacion.
After the first two batters drew walks in the bottom of the ninth, designated hitter Chuckie Robinson grounded into a double play, and shortstop Jeremy Pena lined out to end the game, 7-4, in the Marlins’ favor.
In addition to his 1.000 batting average, Chisholm has drove in two runs and scored a run so far this spring. He has been clutch so far, scoring the go-ahead run on Saturday shortly after stealing third base, and scoring one of the go ahead runs again on Tuesday on Encarnacion’s three-run shot.
Chisholm showed plate discipline on Sunday with a five-pitch walk in the seventh before hitting a two-RBI double in the eighth inning of the Marlins’ 5-2 win over the Washington Nationals. He flashed his quick hands defensively as he helped turn three double plays on Sunday, and then showed plate discipline again on Tuesday with two four-pitch walks.
Chisholm and the Marlins will be back in action today, taking on the St. Louis Cardinals at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, in Jupiter, Florida. Following that, Chisholm and the Marlins host the New York Mets on Thursday, the Astros on Friday and play an away game against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.
The Marlins will open their 2020 regular season on March 26, hosting the Philadelphia Phillies in the first of a four-game set at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.
The former Arizona Diamondbacks minor league player of the year is the number four prospect in the Marlins farm system and number 54 overall in all of Major League Baseball according to MLBPipeline. He is a three-time all-star in the minor leagues, a former Southern League Player of the Week while playing for the Double-A Jackson Generals, and a two-time spring training invitee.
Chisholm was promoted to the Marlins’ 40-man roster a year ago and is looking to take it a step further by making the opening day roster this year.
In a four-year minor league career, he is batting .255 with 56 home-runs, 173 RBIs and 192 runs scored. Chisholm hit in excess of 20 home-runs and had more than 50 RBIs and 50 runs scored for the second consecutive season a year ago.
The other Bahamian in spring training, shortstop Lucius Fox with the Tampa Bay Rays, has played in two games thus far and is 1-for-2 with two RBIs. He has also drawn two walks. Fox is listed as the number 19 prospect in the Rays farm system.
