Bahamian professional baseball players Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm and Lucius Fox, shortstops for their respective teams, both saw action over the weekend as Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Spring Training Grapefruit League continued.
Chisholm was in action for his Miami Marlins on Saturday and Sunday, and Fox played for the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday as both were called up to spring training again.
On Sunday, Chisholm had a hit in his only at-bat and had two runs batted in (RBI) as his team pulled off a 5-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. In two games in spring training this season, Chisholm is a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. On Saturday, he was 2-for-2 and scored a run in a 5-3 win for the Marlins over the New York Mets. On Sunday, he was substituted into the game in the top of the fifth inning, and connected for a double off Nationals’ pitcher Derek Self in his only at-bat. With his team up 3-2, the Bahamian sent the ball to right field on a ground rule double. That hit sent home right fielder Jerar Encarnacion and catcher Christian Lopes and the Marlins went up 5-2.
On Saturday, Chisholm was substituted into the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, and his hits came in the top of the fifth and the eighth innings. He scored in the top of the eighth inning after Lewin Diaz hit a sharp single ball to center field. That run gave the Marlins a 4-3 lead. Chisholm showed his speed when he stole third base before he scored the run.
Last year in spring training for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chisholm went 3-for-14 in 11 games. The speedy shortstop is looking to secure a position on the Marlins opening day roster.
The Marlins now have a 2-0 win loss-record in spring training.
Fox, who was called up to spring training for the third consecutive year, went 1-for-2 and had a RBI in a 9-7 comeback victory for the Rays over the New York Yankees yesterday afternoon.
He was substituted into the game in the top of the sixth inning, and got into the action right away on defense as he got a deflection on a hit.
Fox singled on a line drive to the left field in the bottom of the sixth inning, driving in two runs and advancing to second on the throw home. With that play, the Yankees’ lead was cut to 6-5.
Last year for the Rays, Fox played in 11 spring training games and went 6-for-18 with two RBIs.
In his only game this spring training, he has already tied his RBI total from last season and will look to do more damage as spring training continues.
The Rays have a 1-1 win-loss record. They will be in action against the Boston Red Sox today, starting at 1.05 p.m.
The Marlins also return to the field today when they welcome the St. Louis Cardinals for a 1 p.m. game.
