GBTA stage national tennis tournament in Freeport

The Grand Bahama Tennis Association (GBTA) Junior National Tournament was held this past weekend in Freeport, Grand Bahama, at the YMCA Center. The event sponsor was Bahamas Clear Water & Ice.

The event was sanctioned by the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) and was the first junior event in Grand Bahama on the national calendar for 2020.

BLTA President Darnette Weir along with GBTA President Natishka Barrett and tournament directors Danny Rigby and MacArthur Rigby were on hand for the tournament draw. President Barrett spoke about the tournament.

“It was an overall successful one. It could not have been properly executed without the commitment and hard work of my fellow councillors and other supporters. We are always grateful to all traveling players, coaches and parents from Nassau who join us,” said Barrett. She continued: “The event would not have been possible without our sponsor Greg Laroda, owner of Bahama Clear Water & Ice, who not only demonstrated his commitment to the nation’s youth financially but was personally on hand to watch the matches, speak at the opening ceremony and also assisted with awarding the winners and runners-up with their awards.”

The players were also commended for their participation.

In a statement, the BLTA expressed congratulations to all the winners, runners-up and all of the junior athletes who participated. There was also special mention of the two triple crown winners, Michael Major Jr. and Sierra Rodgers, on their tournament play.

In girls 8s singles, Tierra Johnson prevailed as the winner and Danielle Saunders was the runner-up. In boys 8s, Kingston Rees was the winner and Godfrey Clear finished as the runner-up. In girls 10s, Marlee Martin won and Kaylah Fox was the runner-up. In boys 10s, Patrick Mactaggart won and Cameron Ferguson was the runner-up. In girls 12s, BreAnn Ferguson prevailed and Millie Beukes was the runner-up. In boys 12s, Jackson Mactaggart won and Jerald Carroll was the runner-up.

Rodgers came out on top in girls 14s. Ferguson was the runner-up. Major Jr. won in the boys 14s category and Carroll was the runner-up. Rodgers also won the girls 16s category and Jalisa Clarke was the runner-up. Major Jr. also won the boys 16s category and Anthony Burrows Jr. was the runner-up.

In doubles, Marlee Martin and Sarai Clarke prevailed in girls 14s. Rachel Thompson and Azaria Junaid were the runners-up. William McCartney and Navon Bethel won the boys 14s doubles title. Patrick Mackey Jr. and Sharano Hanna were the runners-up. Rodgers and Jalisa Clarke took the girls 18s doubles title. Genesis Missick and Alyssa Roy were the runners-up. Major Jr. and Khai Rees won the boys 18s doubles title and Burrows Jr. and Carroll were the runners-up.
