The C.H. Reeves Raptors got off to a strong start in their title defense as they look to repeat as Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) Junior Track and Field Champions. Action at the 27th annual edition of the championships got underway yesterday at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.
While the Raptors have a sizeable lead over the A.F. Adderley Tigers heading into their final day of competition today, the scores for the senior division were unavailable up to press time.
The Raptors have a score of 295 points. The Tigers are trailing them with a total of 211 points. Sitting in third place are the S.C. McPherson Sharks with 139 points.
In the under-16 combined division, the Raptors have a total score of 189 points. The Tigers are a distant second with 114 points. Rounding out the top three are the Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves with 93 points.
It’s a closer race in the under-14 division as the Raptors have a slimmer lead with 106 total points while the Tigers have 97. Sitting behind the Tigers are the L.W. Young Golden Eagles with 78 points.
The Raptors went 3-for-4 in the 4 x 100 meters (m) relays as they won the under-14 boys, under-16 girls and under-16 boys. The Tigers won the under-14 girls race.
The Raptors under-14 boys 4x100m relay team clocked 52.28 seconds to win that race. The Tigers were second with a time of 53.35 seconds. Winning the bronze medal were the Timberwolves as they finished the race in 54.35 seconds.
In the under-16 boys division, the Raptors 4x100m relay team finished in 48.30 seconds. The Timberwolves held on to win the silver as they clocked 48.71 seconds. The bronze medal went to the Tigers who clocked 48.75 seconds.
In the under-16 girls 4x100m relay race, the Raptors ran 52.65 seconds to set a meet record and cart off the gold medal. The previous record was 53.14 seconds. Second place went to the Sharks, running a time of 54.77 seconds. Running away with the bronze medal were the Tigers in 55.70 seconds.
A new meet record was set by the Tigers’ under-14 girls 4x100m relay team when they clocked 54.73 seconds. The previous record was 55.72 seconds. The Golden Eagles won the silver medal with a time 55.16 seconds. Third position went to the H.O. Nash Lions in a time of 56.57 seconds.
A’Karee Roberts set a new meet record in the under-14 girls 1200m race. The Golden Eagles runner managed to finish the race in 4:26.70. The previous record was 4:32.54. Finishing in second place behind Roberts was the Tigers’ Ava Sawyer in a time of 4:33.15. The D.W. Davis Royals’ Stacyann Humes was third as she recorded a time of 4:37.19.
The Sharks’ Carlyssia Armbrister set a new meet record in the under-16 girls 1500 meters race as she clocked 5:40.01. The old record was 5:44.31. The silver medal was picked up by T.A. Thompson Scorpions’ Desha Pierre, as she recorded a time of 5:45.05. The Tigers’ Ashlee Sawyer won the bronze medal after she finished in 5:49.55.
In the field events, the juniors broke four meet records.
In the under-14 girls long jump, the Golden Eagles’ Ryniqua Dolce set a record when she leapt 4.66m (15’ 3-1/2”). She erased the old record of 4.30m (14’ 1-1/4”). The Raptors’ Fredranae Smith leapt 4.11m (13’ 5-3/4”) to win the silver medal. The Lions’ Da-Vantae Williams also jumped 4.11m but had to settle for the bronze medal, as Smith had a better second-best leap.
The Raptors’ Daijah Louima was successful in the under-16 girls high jump when she raised the meet record to 1.47m (4’ 9-3/4”). The previous record was 1.44m (4’ 8-3/4”). The Tigers’ duo of Vanessa Sawyer and Kyliah Johnson won the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Sawyer cleared 1.32m (4’ 4”) and her teammate cleared 1.30m (4’ 3-1/4”).
The Timberwolves’ Elijah Roker was on a mission in the long jump pit when he leapt 5.83m (19’ 1-1/2”) to win the under-16 boys event. That was a new championship record as the old record was 5.81m (19’ 0-3/4”). The Scorpions’ Royheem Robinson won the silver medal after he was able to post a leap of 5.67m (18’ 7-1/4”). Winning the bronze medal was the Raptors’ Johnathan Rodgers who jumped 5.53m (18’ 1-3/4”).
The final record to be set on day one of action was in the under-16 boys javelin throw. That record was set by the Royals’ Gerrad Rolle. He threw 39m (127’ 11-1/2”)to break the old record of 36.87m (120’ 11-1/2”). The Golden Eagles’ Cyril Saunders Jr. threw 38.59m (120’ 0-1/2”) to win the silver medal. The final podium spot went to the Raptors’ Kaden McKinney who threw 36.62m (120’ 1-3/4”).
A champion will be crowned today in the junior division. Action gets underway this morning at 9 o’clock for both the juniors and the seniors. The seniors will conclude competition tomorrow.
