DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — The University of The Bahamas’ (UB) multi-event specialist Ken Mullings won the pole vault competition, and Benjamin Clarke took the high jump event at the Embry-Riddle First Chance/Last Chance Meet in Daytona Beach, Florida this past weekend.
The team also turned in four second place performances to open international outdoor competition.
Despite the windy conditions, national decathlon and indoor heptathlon record holder Mullings won the men’s pole vault, clearing 4.35 meters (m) – 14’ 3-1/4”.
“My approach was really on today,” he said. “I am satisfied with my performance.”
Mullings also placed fifth in the 100m crossing the finish line in 11.07 seconds.
“It was an opener for the 100 meters and the outdoor pole vault, and for me to still be attempting my personal best at pole vault shows that what I’ve done off-season is working,” he said.
Clarke easily cleared 1.83m (6’) and 1.93m (6’ 4”) in the men’s high jump, but had two knockdowns at 1.98m (6’ 6”) before clearing it on his final attempt. He attempted 2.03m (6’ 7-3/4”) but the wind and a nagging injury was working against him. He bowed out after his first attempt and said he was still pleased with his performance.
“It was rough getting adjusted to the weather,” he said. “I was focusing mainly on being technically sound and I think I executed that through most of my jumps. I focused on my run-up, take-off and my arch and it was kind of choppy at the beginning, but once I got adjusted everything came together.”
The mens’ 4x400m relay team of Kendrick Thompson, Brandon Hanna, Tyler Gardiner and Donya Roberts was poised to win the event, and after the first two legs, it looked like the team would hold off the three teams from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). The last two legs got hit with a strong wind on the back stretch and just could not hold off Embry-Riddle’s ‘A’ team. The team took second in 3:21.82. Embry-Riddle’s ‘A’ team won in just about half of a second faster at 3:21.25.
In the men’s 400m hurdles competition, Hanna out-matched the competitors in his heat, easily winning that heat, but had to settle for second in the final in 56.55 seconds. Earl Green of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Wilmington won in 53.08 seconds.
Keianno Rolle sat in second spot in the triple jump competition in the second round when he jumped 13.02m (42’ 8-3/4”). However, he then had a lackluster jump and two fouls. On his final attempt, he popped a 13.34m (43’ 9”) jump, but it was not enough to get the win. Rolle settled for second as Markel Pryor, representing the Webber International University Warriors, won with a leap of 13.75m (45’ 1-1/2”).
Edvaughn Carey placed second in the open men’s shot put with a best throw of 12.71m (41’ 8-1/2”). He also placed sixth in the 100m in 11.15 seconds and was 10th in the discus competition with a best throw of 34.44m (113’).
Kendrick Thompson had a great start in the open men’s 100m, but in the last phase of the race he lost his pace and settled for third. His time was 10.87 seconds. Fellow Bahamian Michael Matthieu won the event in 10.84 seconds.
In the men’s 800m, Elijah Swain and Donya Roberts took off strong and got out ahead of the pack. In the second 400m of the race, they could not hold their pace. Swain finished fifth in 2:04.08 and Roberts finished eighth in 2:10.91.
Tyler Gardiner led for the first three laps of men’s 1500m but could not hold off a late surge by the pack behind him. He finished sixth in 4:18.12.
