Stepfather recalls night of Fox Hill shooting

The stepfather of one of the victims of a mass shooting told a Supreme Court jury that he met him bleeding from the head shortly after hearing sounds he mistook for firecrackers.

Carl Kemp’s stepson, Shaquille Demeritte, was one of four people murdered after a drive-by shooting at Fox Hill Park on December 27, 2013.

Prosecutors say that Peter Rolle, Justin Williams and Jermaine Curry killed Claudezino Davis, Demeritte, Eric Morrison and Shenique Sands and attempted to murder Chino Davis, Janet Davis, John Davis, Samuel Ferguson, Jermaine Pratt and Leroy Taylor in the incident.

During his testimony, Kemp said that he was at home around 6 p.m. when he heard a noise that sounded like firecrackers.

A short time later, a stranger came to his house and gave him information that caused Kemp and his wife to walk to the Fox Hill Park.

When they arrived at the park, Kemp said that he saw Demeritte lying on the ground of the basketball court. Although he was bleeding from the head, Demeritte was responsive.

Kemp recalled seeing crowds surrounding other injured persons on the park.

Kemp said that he went to the morgue with Demeritte’s biological father, Michael Kelly, where they identified his body.

The case continues before Justice Deborah Fraser.

Rodger Thompson and Zoe Gibson appear for the director of public prosecutions.

Murrio Ducille, Sonia Timothy and Geoffrey Farquharson represent the defendants who are on bail.
