For the first time in the history of the Red Cross, it has employed electric vehicles on a mission.
A press statement from Easy Cars Sales explained that a fledgling partnership between BYD Auto and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) could lead to the organization’s use of electric vehicles globally.
Easy Cars Sales is the sole dealer for BYD electric vehicles in The Bahamas and according to the release, BYD is “the largest manufacturer and leading global brand of electric vehicles in the world”.
The Bahamas, in the midst of the Red Cross’ continuing Dorian relief efforts, will be the testing ground for its use of electric vehicles.
“Not only do electric vehicles revolutionize personal and professional transportation by reducing their carbon
footprints, they can also support the mission and values of humanitarian organizations,” the release noted.
“Easy Cars Sales has facilitated this partnership by leasing three BYD Yuan SUV cars to assist in relief and restoration efforts coordinated in New Providence by the IFRC after Hurricane Dorian, marking the first time ever anywhere in the world that this organization has used electric cars in its disaster response efforts.”
Deputy Operations Manager for Hurricane Dorian with the IFRC James Bellamy said in the release that this is the organization’s opportunity to test electric vehicles in a controlled environment.
“The organization has a 2030 goal to get operations more carbon neutral,” said Bellamy.
“It’s not going to be easy because a lot of the places we work don’t have the infrastructure, but we saw here an opportunity to take our first step using these electric vehicles and their user-friendly technology.”
Easy Car Sales Partner Pia Farmer counts the Red Cross’ move as a milestone.
“Part of reconstruction efforts in Grand Bahama and Abaco are several plans for solar solutions in homes and businesses to restore power after Hurricane Dorian and electric cars are 100 percent solar-ready,” Farmer said.
“Electric vehicles provide a more sustainable solution as we reimagine the future of energy in our country.”
