PM: Eleuthera will see major roadworks within a year

Dr. Hubert Minnis

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis announced that the government will commence major roadworks on Eleuthera within a year.

During a town hall meeting in South Eleuthera on Thursday, Minnis said, “The Ministry of Works has already made a commitment and Cabinet has made a commitment that your entire roadway would be looked at very soon. The monies are aside for that and within the next year that will be dealt with appropriately.

“Also, necessary striping and cauterizing will be introduced to your roadwork. You will not get sand sealed roads. Your roads will be built like I-95. So, your roads will be similar to New Providence. You have graduated.”

The prime minister did not say how much the project will cost.

However, he did note that he was aware that the island has “been challenged with roadworks”.

“We’ve made a commitment,” Minnis said.

“We only have a certain amount of money that is used or must be utilized for the entire Bahamas. We made a commitment that what we do initially is to look at those areas, especially that would help to generate the economy and elevate and bring greater returns in terms of revenue and we can take that to assist with every other island.”

Minnis said the government intends “to concentrate on the Family Islands”.

“We want to ensure that it’s now your time in the Family Islands,” he said.
