Twenty-two beds are being added to Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) to help solve the problem of overcrowding, Minister of Health Dr. Duane Sands said.
“In an effort to ease overcrowding at the Princess Margaret Hospital, the old Operating Theater is being renovated to create a comfortable 22-bed unit,” Sands said.
“It is expected that this newly re-purposed space will ease the overcrowding at the nation’s primary healthcare facility.”
Overcrowding has been a longstanding issue at PMH especially in the Accident and Emergency Department.
Sands has noted on several instances that boarders at the hospital have also contributed to the issue. Last month, he said nearly 40 boarders at the hospital who have been abandoned by their families were taking up much-needed bed space.
Sands said the government was considering moving those boarders into nursing homes and said the issue was being “aggressively” dealt with. However, it remains unclear what progress has been made on the matter so far.
