Fox finishes season strong in the minors

Bahamian professional baseball player in the Kansas City Royals organization Lucius Fox Jr. had a strong ending to his team’s 2021 Minor League Baseball (MiLB) regular season as he secured at least one hit in each of his final 10 games.

That stretch included three of his four home-runs of the season for the Omaha Storm Chasers of the Midwest Division in Triple-A East baseball. Fox showed the Royals’ top brass exactly what he could do when he is healthy. In the 10-game stretch, he went 18-for-44, batting .409.

Fox was able to help the Storm Chasers finish the season on a four-game winning streak, sweeping their four-game series against the Iowa Cubs. He played in three of those games and finished 6-for-14.

One of his better games during that stretch came in the Storm Chasers’ 10-5 victory over the Cubs. He finished that game 3-for-5, one hit shy of a cycle. He had a single in the top of the first inning, picked up the double on a line drive in the top of the third inning, and hit his fourth homer of the season for the Storm Chasers and his third in his last 10 games in the top of the sixth inning to put his team up 8-2. In his other two at-bats, he struck out and batted into a forced out.

The infielder also finished that game with two runs scored, two runs batted in (RBIs) and a stolen base.

In the next game, the Storm Chasers clobbered the Cubs 22-4. Fox finished 2-for-5 and hit the ball out of the park once in that game. He had two runs scored and one RBI.

On the season, Fox finished 52-for-215 for the Storm Chasers, with an ironic batting average of .242 – The Bahamas’ country code. In the 67 games he played, he finished with four home-runs, 41 runs and 21 RBIs. He had 19 stolen bases. He recorded an on-base percentage (OBP) of .347, a slugging percentage (SLG) of .363 and an on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of .671.

The Storm Chasers win/loss record on the season was over .500 as they finished 66-54. They were 5-5 in their last 10 games. They placed eighth in the Triple-A East league.

The 2015 signee had a great September, going 24-for-78, batting .308 – well above his season average. He scored 17 runs and had 12 RBIs. He had three home-runs in September after not hitting any for the Storm Chasers all season. He also had five stolen bases that month.

In late May, Fox was placed on the seven-day injured list and was sent to the Arizona Complex League (ACL) in early July. He was sent back to the Storm Chasers on July 6.

One of the highlights of the season for Fox was being called up to Major League Baseball (MLB) by the Royals on July 30. It was a great achievement for him as he was the eighth Bahamian to be called up to the majors although he did not check into the game.

Fox will look to join the Miami Marlins’ Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr. in the major leagues next season. Chisholm was the seventh Bahamian to be called up.

Fox along with other Bahamians such as Warren Saunders, Keithron Moss, D’Shawn Knowles and Ian Lewis made a return to the diamond this year after their 2020 MiLB seasons were cancelled due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic.
