Bahamian collegiate soccer players get on the field

A number of Bahamian collegiate soccer players were in action this past weekend as their seasons continued at various venues around the United States.

At Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School in St. Louis, Missouri, Bahamian Laurann Brown and the Harris-Stowe State University Lady Hornets continued their unbeaten streak with a 4-1 victory over Lyon College on Saturday afternoon. They remained undefeated at 10-0 on the season.

Brown played just seven minutes before receiving a yellow card in the 68th minute. It was her first cautionary warning for the season. The Lady Hornet junior has played in six games this season and has one shot which came against Iowa Wesleyan University on September 15. She played a season-high 60 minutes in that game.

Brown has come off the bench in all six games she has played this season and plays the central defender position. The Hornets sit atop the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Standings with a conference record of 3-0 and overall record of 10-0.

The Lady Hornets outplayed their AMC counterpart in both halves of Saturday’s matchup, posting 21 shots, 12 shots on goal, and four goals.

They will play their next game at Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri, on October 9. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Gabrielle Simms and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Roos won their second game in a row after losing seven in a row. They held off the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks, 1-0, in Grand Forks, North Dakota on Friday, and took care of the North Dakota State University Bison, 1-0, in Fargo, North Dakota on Sunday. Midfielder Simms, who came off the bench for the Roos, played a total of 22 minutes against North Dakota .

She doesn’t have a goal for the season, but has recorded an assist which came on August 27 on the road against the Southern Illinois University Salukis in Carbondale, Illinois.

Simms has started two games this season and played a season-high 65 minutes against the Iowa Hawkeyes on September 9. The Roos have a 4-8 overall record on the season.

They will play their next game at home, at the Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium, in Kansas City, Missouri, against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on October 8.

Simms, who hails from Freeport, Grand Bahama, is in her freshman year.

Ian Lowe and the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-2 loss to the Cardinal Stritch Wolves in Glendale, Wisconsin, on Saturday. The Tigers now have a 7-2 win/loss record on the season.

Lowe didn’t experience any playing time on Saturday but the freshman goalkeeper has allowed two goals on the season and has a 1.51 goals-against average. He has a .600 save percentage.

Lowe and the Tigers will play their next game at home, at the Snowbarger Athletic Complex in Bourbonnais, Illinois, hosting the University of St. Francis Fighting Saints on October 5.
