Bahamian super featherweight boxer Lester Brown Jr. is set to return to the ring this month. He appears on the undercard of the Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez/Avni Yildirim main event fight Saturday February 27 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
The Bahamian, who sports a 4-2-3 win/loss/draw record, is set to take on American Marc Castro who is new to the professional side of the sport with just one fight under his belt. He has a 1-0 record.
The last time Brown was in the ring was back in December 2019, losing to Cuban Manuel Correa at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Expo in Miami. Brown had planned a few fights in 2020 but they never came to fruition because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fights were rescheduled and others were canceled.
The orthodox fighter is happy to be back in the ring and to be fighting on the same fight card with Mexican fighter Alvarez. The latter is the unified super middleweight champion and will be going up against Turkish fighter Yildrim – the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) challenger.
“I am up against an inexperienced boxer, so he should be doing all the homework. In fact, word is going around that he’s a little scared. I am very excited and blessed to be on the same card as Canelo – looking forward to it,” Brown said.
The Roy Jones Promotions fighter has been training here in New Providence in recent times and said it has been going well for him. He feels he is in tip-top shape. In his last four fights, Brown lost two and fought to a draw in the other two.
“In my last few fights, there has been a mix of biased judges and bad decisions. In my last fight in December 2019, I give myself fault for how that one went. I knew I was dehydrated but still went on anyway, so that was a lesson learnt,” Brown stated.
Brown, who is known as a fighter with quick hands, will be looking to make up for lost time in the ring. He has his sights set on getting in about eight fights this year. He said he has established some goals for himself this year.
“I want to be a top fighter and possibly fight for a world title soon. That all depends on the level of competition I take and conquer and I do intend on fighting top tier fighters as I always do. I don’t cherry pick or look for easy fights like other fighters,” Brown said.
Brown’s trainer for this fight is his father, Lester Brown Sr. The younger Brown thanked his sponsor Greg Michelier at Think Simple for sticking with him over the years and for his continued support.
The boxer is looking to go to Miami next week and settle in, mentally and physically preparing for his first fight of the year. He is expecting to end up in the win column.
