Englerston MP Glenys Hanna-Martin yesterday called for MPs to take pay cuts, given The Bahamas’ economic position.
“We should be taking a cut on our salaries in this House,” she said during the debate of the Civil Aviation Authority Bahamas Bill, 2021; the Civil Aviation Bill, 2021, and the Bahamas Air Navigation Services Authority Bill, 2021.
“We should be taking a cut. But we don’t want to do it. We don’t want to sacrifice. But you’re telling people you have to wait a year, two years for your money.
“Something is wrong with that picture.
“You cannot send a signal that you are entitled to better standards or accommodations than average Bahamians.”
Hanna-Martin made the comments as she claimed that police reservists have not been paid.
Dames, however, said those officers have been paid for their work in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
“I have spoken to the commissioner of police recently on several occasions just to follow up,” he said.
“And as far as I am aware, and based on my conversations with the commissioner, there is nothing outstanding owing to the reserves in respect to overtime as a result of the time spent or worked during Dorian.”
