Chisholm flashes gloves, helps turn five double plays

Bahamian infielder with the Miami Marlins Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm was in and out of the lineup over the weekend, helping his team pick up a quartet of wins against the Philadelphia Phillies. They won four and dropped two, and the finale of the seven-game series is set for this afternoon at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.

Chisholm went a combined 2-for-11 at the plate in those six games, scored three runs and was a part of five double plays.

In the opener, Chisholm got the start at second base and batted eight. He finished 1-for-4 with a run scored, helping the Marlins earn a hard-fought 7-6 walk-off win over their National League East Division rival on Thursday. At the plate, Chisholm had a single, drew a walk, struck out twice in his five at-bats and left four stranded. He had a busy day in the field, recording six assists and two outs including a double play.

In the top of the first inning, he caught a mini pop fly off the bat of Didi Gregorius for the third out in that inning. One inning later, Chisholm turned a double play off a ground ball off the bat of Phillies lead-off batter Andrew McCutchen. Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas fielded the ground ball, threw to Chisholm for one out at second and then Chisholm relayed the throw to first baseman Jesús Aguilar to get McCutchen.

Chisholm fielded a ground ball off the bat of Rhys Hoskins in the top of the third and threw him out, and did the same to Jean Segura in the top of the sixth. He threw out Bryce Harper for the third and final out in the top of the seventh and then threw out Gregorius off another ground ball in the top of the eighth.

Chisholm threw out Harper again in the top of the ninth, preserving a 6-6 tie, and had an opportunity to win it for the Marlins in the bottom of the ninth but struck out swinging with the winning run just 90 feet away. One batter later, Chisholm’s teammate Jorge Alfaro came through for them, slapping the game-winning hit to center field.

On Friday, the Marlins split a doubleheader with the Phils. They were shut out 11-0 in the opener and won the second game, 5-3. The 22-year-old Bahamian got the start at second base in the opener, batted eighth and didn’t play in the nightcap.

In the opener of the doubleheader on Friday, Chisholm finished 0-for-1 with a strikeout and was hit by a pitch from Phillies starter Aaron Nola. In the field, he had an assist after switching from second base to shortstop in the top of the fifth as Isan Díaz came on as a defensive replacement and played second. In that same top of the fifth, Chisholm threw out Andrew McCutchen on a ground ball.

On Saturday, Chisholm pinch-hit for Rojas in the bottom of the seventh and stayed in the game and played shortstop. In the bottom of the seventh he walked and two innings he struck out looking. The Marlins lost that game, 12-6. In the field, he deflected a ball off the bat of Alec Bohm which scored a run for the Phils, and in the top of the ninth, he threw out Hoskins.

Chisholm once again saw action on Sunday, playing in both games of the doubleheader.

In the first game, Chisholm got the start at shortstop and batted eighth in the Marlins’ lineup. He finished 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, helping the Marlins to record a 2-1 victory. He recorded four assists and an out in the field, helping to turn two double plays.

Chisholm threw out Harper on a ground out in the top of the fourth, turned a double play in the top of the fifth and then helped turn another in the top of the sixth. In the top of the fifth, he took the throw from second baseman Diaz off a ground ball from Adam Haseley and threw to Cooper for the double play. One inning later, he fielded the ground ball off the bat of Ronald Torreyes and threw to Diaz to start the double play.

In the top of the seventh, Chisholm ended the Phillies’ threat, throwing out Kyle Garlick on another ground ball for the final out of the game.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Chisholm started at second base and batted seventh. He finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and the Marlins won easily, 8-1, passing the Phillies in the standings. They now sit in second in the National League East with a 23-21 win/loss record, three and a half games behind the first place Atlanta Braves (28-19). The Phillies stand at 23-22.

In his first at-bat in the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday, Chisholm grounded out to Phillies shortstop Gregorius. He was called out on strikes in his second at-bat, and singled off Phillies reliever Ranger Suárez in the bottom of the sixth. One batter later, he showed his speed, scoring on a double from first on a shot to left field from Rojas as the Marlins blew the game open. Chad Wallach then hit a two-run home run for the Marlins, giving them a comfortable 8-1 lead. Marlins reliever Nick Vincent retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.

In the field, Chisholm turned two more double plays – one in the top of the third and the other in the top of the fourth, fielding throws from Rojas each time and throwing to Aguilar.

For the season, the Bahamian left-handed batter is hitting .161 with one home run and two RBIs. He has five hits in 31 at-bats, has four bases on balls, two stolen bases and has scored six runs. Chisholm has a .278 on-base percentage (OBP) and a .600 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).

In the field, Chisholm has 14 putouts, 22 assists, an error and has been a part of seven double plays. He has a fielding percentage of 1.000 at second base and .933 at shortstop. The talented Bahamian has started six games at second base this season and three at shortstop.

The Marlins end their series against the Phils today, playing an afternoon game at 4:10 p.m. They will host the Boston Red Sox for three games starting tomorrow, and will then host the struggling World Series Champions Washington Nationals for five games this weekend.

Overall, the Marlins are fifth in the standings in the National League. With just two weeks remaining in the shortened 60-game schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they are right in the mix for a playoff spot. With a special 10-team playoff format being utilized this year, for each league, the Marlins find themselves comfortably in the running. Following their series with the Nationals, they will end the season with seven games on the road – four in Atlanta to take on the Braves and the final three against the New York Yankees in New York.
