Although he’s stepping away from his role as chief executive officer of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation (BCCEC), Jeffrey Beckles said he still intends to be an advocate for a stronger, more resilient private sector.
The BCCEC released an ad yesterday in search of a new chief executive officer.
Beckles said the primary reason for his departure is the security of his family.
“My first business is my home and at the end of the day I’m still all in and a strong advocate for a strong economy and still a strong advocate for a strong and vibrant private sector. That will never change. I’m still a strong advocate for the small businessman, that will not change,” he told Guardian Business yesterday.
“I do know this, though – the more secure that I feel I am for my family, the better I can be for all those entities.”
While Beckles didn’t share his thoughts on who would be considered for his replacement, he said he remains committed to help the Chamber’s board in whatever way is needed.
“This country of ours is going to take all of our non-partisan, non-emotional effort to rebuild it. And regardless of where we are, if Bahamians by and large accept that fact that the country is ours to build and we have to do our part, I believe we can get it done,” he said.
“It is when we believe that because ‘I am not the titled this’, or ‘because I’m not working with this group or the other, I can’t contribute’, you couldn’t say anything further from the truth. I believe that while we are changing lanes, we should never change the objective of building a stronger Bahamas and that is what I’m committed to.”
Beckles was appointed chief executive officer of the BCCEC following the resignation of former Chief Executive Officer Edison Sumner in 2018.
