Although not reflected in the national COVID-19 figures released yesterday, officials from Baker’s Bay Golf and Ocean Club said two people working on the development tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday.
“Baker’s Bay Golf and Ocean Club at Great Guana Cay, Abaco has received reports that an employee of Bahamian subcontractor FES, who was working on the property and is a resident of Abaco with a history of travel between Abaco and Grand Bahama, has tested positive for COVID-19,” a statement from Baker’s Bay said.
“Additionally, the company can confirm one of its global workforce employees, who tested negative for COVID-19 before arriving on island and had been on island for 20 days, tested positive for COVID-19 on July 21, 2020.
“The person in question arrived in The Bahamas at Baker’s Bay on July 2, 2020.
“Yesterday, the employee was evacuated and is currently hospitalized and receiving care.”
The company said it has already started a robust COVID-19 response including, “masking, physical distancing, a COVID-19 oriented cleaning protocol, contact tracing and self-quarantining and testing”.
“The company has and will continue to place the necessary resources, expertise, and prudent judgement in the care, safety and overall well-being of the Bahamian people and all employees.”
Health officials reported an additional 25 cases of COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total cases in The Bahamas to 219.
In total, there have been 114 confirmed cases on New Providence, 81 on Grand Bahama, 17 on Bimini, one on Cat Cay, two on Cat Island and four on the Berry Islands.
It is unclear why the dashboard neglected to include the two cases from Abaco.
The Bahamas has reported more cases in a two-week window than it did in nearly four months.
Baker’s Bay, which was extensively damaged in Hurricane Dorian, recently defended its decision to bring in 135 Mexican workers to assist with Hurricane Dorian recovery and reconstruction, noting a “critical” need for “a large scale specialized” workforce in a short time frame.
