The Economic Recovery Committee (ERC) has received nearly 300 recommendations on how to help The Bahamas recover from the COVID-19 economic crisis and become more resilient, the committee’s co-chair Marlon Johnson said yesterday.
The ERC has been charged with finding solutions to supplement economic growth and help the country to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic stronger than before.
“We’ve been getting suggestions for quite some time now. We probably have close to 300 submissions in – submissions, ideas, suggestions – which we are collating and have given to the various subcommittees on the subject area,” Johnson told Guardian Business.
“I am very pleased with the feedback we’re getting in the various forums. People are being very, very candid and frank in their views and their opinions and with providing really good suggestions and feedback. We continue to ensure that the public is aware that this isn’t just a kick the box exercise. We truly want to get the feedback. We truly want people to continue sending in their suggestions.”
The ERC has been hosting a series of virtual town hall meetings highlighting its ten subcommittees that cover the economic spectrum,
including digitization, tourism and the orange economy, structural reform, healthcare and social capital, agriculture, fisheries and manufacturing; family island development, labor and education, financial services and commerce and entrepreneurship.
“We are sharing some of the ideas in the various forums that we’re having but more importantly, we are encouraging feedback from the public,” Johnson said of the virtual meetings.
The ERC is expected to present a full report on its recommendations to the government by early September.
