AG’s office undergoing ‘deep cleaning’ after worker tests positive for COVID-19

Carl Bethel.

The Office of the Attorney General is undergoing a “deep cleaning” after an employee tested positive for COVID-19, according to Attorney General Carl Bethel.

Bethel said he was informed that the employee has not been in the office for 14 days.

He said the individual was out for 13 days before testing positive.

“But we are, nonetheless, deep cleaning the building and any employees who were near the employee have been asked to remain in isolation,” Bethel told The Nassau Guardian.

His comments came after Bahamas Public Services Union (BPSU) President Kimsley Ferguson indicated yesterday that he received no communication from the permanent secretary in the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs on the matter.

“I reached out to the permanent secretary there to get an update or understanding as to what had transpired,” Ferguson said.

“No details were forthcoming, so I’m unable to clearly state what [transpired] at the attorney general’s office other than what I [saw] in the newspapers.

“I [specifically] stated to the permanent secretary there that this is not the way or means by which the union should be finding out that members of their bargaining unit have been adversely impacted by some health issue in such sensitive times like this.

“And so, there was a dialogue and the response that was received from the permanent secretary was very disappointing for someone of that particular calibre who knows what their duty and responsibility is.

“And so, we are still awaiting a response from that particular area as to what has been done and how the staff [was] impacted and how the situation is being handled.”

The Office of the Judiciary, which is in the Garnet Levarity Justice Centre, in Freeport, Grand Bahama, was closed earlier this month following potential COVID-19 exposure.

“This action is taken out of an abundance of caution pending the completion of ongoing investigations by health officials,” the Office of the Judiciary said in a statement on July 19.

The total number of cases confirmed in The Bahamas since March 15 is 484.
