Lessons for students will begin on September 21, Director of Education Marcellus Taylor announced yesterday in a memo to Ministry of Education staff.
However, it remains unclear whether instruction will be in person or virtual.
“The instructional program for students will commence on Monday, September 21, 2020,” Taylor said.
“Decisions regarding whether students must present themselves at the school’s campus will be determined at a later date. Such decisions will be made in accordance with the prevailing public health conditions on each island.”
The announcement came after much uncertainty over the upcoming school year given the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw schools across the country suspend in-person instruction in March as the country shut down to contain the spread of the virus.
Taylor said teachers will report back to work on September 7 for mandatory professional development activities.
“Teachers must present themselves to their assigned schools to engage in the virtual PDAs,” reads the memo.
“Any teacher wishing to access these sessions away from the school campus must seek the approval of their principal by way of a written request.”
School administrators must participate in virtual conclave sessions on August 31 and September 1, the memo said.
On Tuesday, Minister of Education Jeffrey Lloyd said it is unlikely that the full student body will return to the classroom in September for the start of the new school year.
