Dames: No one above the law

After three tourists were caught jumping a fence to access a closed Cabbage Beach last week, Minister of National Security Marvin Dames reiterated that no one is above the law.

His comments came following widespread criticism from some that the law doesn’t apply to visitors.

“Come on man, the law is for everyone and when you are in breach of it, there ought to be consequences,” Dames said outside Cabinet yesterday.

“You reported it and I trust that they would have taken the appropriate action to deal with the matter,” Dames said.

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis ordered beaches closed for the Independence Day weekend, as a measure to suppress the spread of COVID-19.

A cabbage beach businessman recorded the women explaining why they hopped the fence.

Dames said while the police can’t be everywhere, members of the public are relied on for information and tips and suggested that the businessman should have contacted authorities.

“The greatest tool to any police organization is the community,” Dames said.

“You demonstrated that in calling the police a few days ago. I would hope that they would have responded to your call for their service.”
