“To the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.”
– Jude 1:25
I heard from a friend recently and she told me that her mother suffered a fall in the bathtub and injured her hip. Falling can happen anywhere and to anyone, unexpectedly. And many times, the fall can be tragic.
Then many times, there are those who stumbled but were able to catch up without the fall. The news was all abuzz when United States President Joe Biden stumbled and caught himself on the stairs leading to Air Force One. To stumble and yet not fall is good, but to fall and be able to get up is better, for there are those who fall and are never able to get back up again. But it is better not to fall at all – but we are humans.
Jude is a brief letter of only 25 verses, but it makes a significant contribution to a plea for sound doctrine, warning against false teachers, encouragement to believers to be faithful and a powerful doxology as is in our text today.
Jude introduces himself as a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James. And with all modesty, as James was Jesus’ brother and by extension his brother. He writes this letter, “To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.”
He gives the warning that there are among them certain persons who would try to persuade them to believe in teachings, which are not in keeping with the teachings of Jesus Christ, and encourages them to build yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.
Jude ends this letter with the most powerful doxology, “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.”
In these critical times of crisis, unrests, unemployment, financial decay, failing health, unfaithfulness, disloyalty and no fear of God nor regard for man, we cry out to Almighty God to keep us from falling into temptations; from falling into the sad state of losing our memory, our minds, our love for family and friends; falling from doing that which is right to our brothers, sisters and neighbors; falling from pedestals of influence to the gutter of shame and disdain, but most of all falling from grace to disgrace.
If only we would reach out to God, that which distresses us will become blessings in disguise.
