Bahamian Dwight Coleby and his team, Merkezefendi Belediyesi Denizli Basket (19-8), got their 12th straight win when they picked up a key 82-75 overtime victory at home over Samsunspor at Pamukkale Üniversitesi Spor Salonu in Denizli, Turkey on Monday.
That win gave Denizli the top seed in the Turkey Basketball League (TBL) and the loss dropped Samsunspor (18-9) to second place.
Coleby finished the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 6-for-11 from the field at a 54.6 percent clip, and logged 25 minutes.
As expected, the game was tightly contested as Denizli was playing for the top seed and Samsunspor was looking to put some distance between the two clubs.
The Bahamian scored his first basket at the 7:15 mark of the opening quarter to give his team an 8-1 lead. At the 5:09 mark, Coleby scored another bucket to put his team up 13-5. Denizli eventually held on for a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In true fashion, Samsunspor staged a comeback. They came within one point, 32-31, at the 3:53 mark of the second quarter, but Coleby went on to hit the next two baskets for his team to put them up 36-33 with 2:08 remaining in the first half.
Samsunspor took their first lead of the game when they went up 38-36 with 1:26 remaining in the second quarter. Two free throws from Chauncey Collins with 47 seconds remaining tied the game at 38 points. The score remained the same at the end of the first half.
The third quarter was controlled by the visitors as they outscored Coleby and Denizli in that frame 21-15. They went into the final quarter up 59-53. The fourth quarter was the lowest scoring quarter as both teams failed to surpass the 20-point mark. Denizli scored 16 points – enough to tie the game at the end of regulation at 69. They played good defense as Samsunspor was only able to score 10 points in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, it was all Denizli as they proved to have more left in the tank. They went on to outscore their opponent, 13-6, in the overtime session.
Hakan Yapar led Denizli with 18 points and six rebounds. Samsunspor was led by Kahlil Dukes who scored a game-high 20 points.
Both teams shot the same from the field – 43.3 percent. The biggest difference in the game might have been the made three-pointers as Denizli connected on 17 of their shots from deep while Samsunspor made just six three-pointers.
Also seeing action in the TBL was Bahamian Zane Knowles and his team, Balikesir Büyükşehir Belediyespor (15-12). They were not as fortunate as Denizli as they lost to Semt77 Yalovaspor (16-11) 72-62 on the road at Yıl Spor Salonu in Yalova, Turkey, yesterday afternoon.
It was the fourth straight loss for Balikesir.
Knowles was able to finish with team highs of 13 points and seven rebounds. He went 6-for-11 from the field to shoot 54.6 percent.
Yalovaspor did most of their damage in the first half of the game, leading 49-31 at the break. Knowles and his team were unable to recover in the second half despite holding their opponents to just seven points in the fourth quarter. Yalovaspor held on to win the game.
Lamont Jones scored a game-high 25 points for Yalovaspor.
Next up for Knowles and Balikesir will be a home matchup against Büyükşehir Hastanesi Konyaspor Basketbol (16-11) at Kurtdereli Spor Salonu in Balikesir, Turkey, on Sunday. The game is set to get underway at 3:45 p.m. local time, 8:45 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) here in The Bahamas.
