Sandals Royal Bahamian resort’s reopening delayed to November

While most other Sandals properties throughout the region have reopened or will reopen next month, the company will not reopen its Royal Bahamian resort until November 4.

Sandals executives announced last month that the property would not reopen on the previously scheduled May 1 because of planned renovations, but had not announced another firm date.

The renovations, billed to be in the millions of dollars, are expected to include a complete reimagining of the resort.

Speaking to the reopening of its New Providence resort, Sandals Resorts International Executive Chairman Adam Stewart said in a statement to Caribbean Journal, “Sandals Royal Bahamian has a storied past and played a starring role in the history of Bahamian tourism, hosting rockstars and royalty and we pledge our continued commitment to this captivating island.

“We honor and celebrate our partnership with this great destination, looking forward not only to reopening this fall, but to the future, when together, Sandals and The Bahamas will continue to exceed our guests’ expectations.”

Stewart said last month that the resort would undergo a “Sandalization” process, updating more than 200 rooms that it couldn’t in the past because of occupancy.

Sandals also has plans to enhance guest experiences with several new features and facilities, including the addition of river suites.

Sandals’ second property in The Bahamas, the Emerald Bay property in Exuma, has been open since January.

All of its other Caribbean resorts in St. Lucia, Jamaica, Grenada and Antigua have opened except for its two Barbados-based properties, which were scheduled to reopen on May 14.

Sandals Royal Bahamian has been closed since March of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic reached The Bahamas’ shores and caused the complete shutdown of the tourism industry.
