Bahamian professional baseball player with the Miami Marlins Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm has finally cooled off, going hitless in his last 12 at-bats, his longest such stretch of the 2021 Major League Baseball (MLB) season.
Lodged in what appears to be his new role, as the Marlins’ lead-off hitter, the 23-year-old Bahamian was 0-for-5 yesterday, striking out three times and bringing his batting average down to .270. For the four-game series, he was 2-for-17 with one RBI and one run scored.

Richardson and the San Francisco Giants, 4-3, on a rainy day at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, on Sunday, dropping the four-game series three games to one. Richardson is a first base coach with the Giants. Chisholm and the Marlins now have a 9-12 win/loss record, tied for third with the Atlanta Braves in the National League East Division. The New York Mets lead the division with a 9-8 record and the Philadelphia Phillies are second with a 10-11 record.
Despite going 0 for his last 12, Chisholm started off the weekend series with a solo blast to deep right field, his fourth home run of the year, tying him for the team lead in that department. For the season, he is hitting .270 (17-for-63) with four home runs, seven RBIs (runs batted in) and nine runs scored.
Chisholm has dropped to fifth on the team in batting average and fourth in on base percentage (OBP) – .365, but still leads in slugging percentage (SLG) – .540 and is second in on-base, plus slugging percentage (OPS) – .904. He leads the Marlins in stolen bases with four, is tied for second on the team in bases on balls (nine), tied for third in runs scored (nine), fifth in hits with 17 and is in a three-way tie for fourth in RBIs with seven.
Prior to Saturday, Chisholm had hit safely in 10 of 11 games.
In his first at-bat yesterday, Chisholm struck out swinging on an 86.9 miles per hour (mph) changeup from Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb who pitched seven inning of three-hit, scoreless ball for the win, and helped his own cause with a two-run triple to drive in two of the Giants’ four runs. The Marlins scored twice in the eight and one in the ninth to make it close, but left the tying run at second in the top of the ninth and the go-ahead run at first when Chisholm grounded out to Giants’ second baseman Tommy La Stella.
Webb (1-1) fanned eight in seven innings and recorded the win to help the Giants improve to 14-8 – tied for second-best in the majors. Paul Campbell (0-1) came on in relief for the Marlins and suffered the loss.
In his second at-bat on Sunday, Chisholm flew out to center field. The talented Bahamian struck out
swinging in his third and fourth at-bats, on a changeup and a slider, respectively. With the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first, Chisholm jumped on a first-pitch fastball in the top of the ninth but grounded out to second to end the game.
Defensively, Chisholm had two assists yesterday, and now has 55 assists and 20 putouts in 77 total chances, splitting time between second base and shortstop. Chisholm has just two errors on the season and has been a part of 13 double plays. He started at second base yesterday.
Chisholm was recently singled out by Statcast and mlb.com as one of baseball’s finest young stars, regarded as one with a huge upside and a power-speed threat. He is the No. 4 prospect of the Marlins and No. 58 in all of Major League Baseball, per MLB Pipeline.
Chisholm and the Marlins now prepare to take on the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game series starting this evening at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, before having a day off on Thursday. First pitch against the Brewers is set for 7:40 tonight.
