Ferguson drafted 27th overall by the Redblacks

Bahamian football player Christopher Ferguson was selected with the 27th overall pick by the Ottawa Redblacks in the Canadian Football League (CFL) Global Draft yesterday afternoon.

He was the third player to be picked by the Redblacks in the draft that had 36 players drafted from 18 different countries. Australia had the most with seven players drafted.

It is a great accomplishment for the offensive linesman as he joins the professional ranks after not being drafted in the 2020 National Football League (NFL) Draft.

The Redblacks tweeted: “Making Moves. With the 27th overall pick of the #CFLGlobalDraft, we are proud to select OL, Christopher Ferguson.”

The Redblacks finished the 2019 CFL regular season with a 3-15 win/loss, fourth in the East Division. The 2021 CFL campaign gets underway on May 23 with preseason games. The first preseason game for the Redblacks will be a matchup against the Montreal Alouettes on Friday May 28, starting at 7:30 p.m.

These two teams will open regular season play against each other on Friday June 11, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Ferguson was a four-year player for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, helping them to achieve back-to-back seasons with an 11-3 win/loss record, including two 6-0 homestands. They also won two straight bowl games, and finished Ferguson’s senior season at number 23 in the Associated Press’ (AP) Top 25 poll.

In his final game, the Birmingham Bowl, Ferguson led his team to victory in Birmingham, Alabama. The Bearcats drubbed Boston College, 38-6. The Bearcats’ offensive line did a good job of opening holes in that game as they had 343 rushing yards. Also, they only gave up two sacks.

On the offensive line, Ferguson has played left tackle, left guard and right tackle. He said he loves to play left guard because he likes the contact at that position.

Ferguson left C.R. Walker Senior High School in 2013 after playing basketball for Coach Trevor Grant.

He said it was not an easy journey for him to get to this point. He had to overcome injury and spent time on the bench before he became a regular starter for the Bearcats and an integral part of their offensive attack.
