Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm hit his first home run of the season, and the longest of his career, blasting a 100.4 miles per hour (mph) four-seam fastball off two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets to the upper deck at Citi Field in New York City, New York, on Saturday.
The mega blast by the Bahamian starting second baseman of the Miami Marlins traveled 402 feet, giving them an early 1-0 lead over the Mets. The Marlins went on to shut out the Mets, 3-0, giving them a split in the first two games of the series. The third game of the series was set for yesterday afternoon, but was suspended due to rain.
On Saturday, batting sixth, Chisholm finished with that solo home run in three at-bats and drew a walk, bringing his batting average up to .200 for the season. He is now batting 4-for-20 for the season with one home run, three runs scored and two RBIs.
On Saturday, it was Chisholm’s monster shot to the upper deck in right field that had everyone talking afterwards. The blast off an 0-2 pitch from deGrom had an exit velocity of 107.4mph. All three pitches in the at-bat were near 100 miles per hour. Chisholm took the first strike looking, swung through the second one, and got on top of a high fastball on the third one and drilled it to right field.
“I was thinking he throwing 100, but it doesn’t look like 100. It looked like 95 today,” said Chisholm afterwards. “I felt like I was seeing the ball really well. After I swung and missed, I felt like I was a little early. I was looking for the offspeed, but I got the fastball and I was sitting back and I just hit it out.”
Marlins’ starting pitcher Trevor Rogers pitched six scoreless innings for the win, giving up just three hits and matching his career high with 10 strikeouts.
“He made an effortless swing right there. It was pretty to watch,” said Rogers of Chisholm’s home run. “We could get up early and I can go out there and do my job. It was a confidence booster for us.”
In Chisholm’s next two at-bats, he struck out swinging and grounded out to Mets’ first baseman Pete Alonso. In the field, he had three putouts, three assists and was a part of one double play.
The Marlins have won just two of their first eight games in the 2021 Major League Baseball (MLB) season and are a full three games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies (5-3). They remain on the road for a four-game set against the Atlanta Braves, starting this evening.
As for Chisholm, the 23-year-old Bahamian professional baseball player has started seven of eight games for the Marlins this year – six at second base and one at shortstop. In addition to hitting .200, he has a .346 on-base percentage (OBP), a .500 slugging percentage (SLG.) and a .846 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).
Hitting-wise, he has been the model of consistency so far this season, with two hits in his first 10 at-bats and two hits in his next 10 at-bats.
In the field, Chisholm has 10 putouts and 17 assists in 27 total chances for a 1.000 fielding percentage. He has helped turn six double plays. On the basepaths, he has two stolen bases.
