Despite a call by jitney drivers for an increase in fares, the Ministry of Transport and Local Government said no increase has been granted.
In a statement, the ministry said, “The Ministry of Transport and Local Government wishes to advise the public that there has been no increase in jitney fares by the government of The Bahamas, despite rumors to the contrary.
“The public is further advised that the schedule of jitney fares remains the same.”
Since they were allowed to resume operations, jitney drivers have expressed a need to increase their fares due to the limited amount of passengers they’re allowed to have at a time. Jitney drivers were seeking an increase for adults from $1.25 to $2.00.
When contacted for comment, The Bahamas Unified Bus Drivers Union Secretary General Corvell Colebrooke declined, saying the union will offer a statement once a final decision is made by the ministry.
