Man accused of rape, burglary

A man accused of rape and burglary has been denied bail.

Prosecutors say that Jackson Sears, 25, raped a 31-year-old woman on Independence Day after he broke into her home.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes did not require Sears to enter pleas to charges of rape and burglary at his initial court appearance on Monday.

Sears won’t plead to the charges until his arraignment in the Supreme Court.

Prosecutors intend to fast-track the matters to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment on November 5.

In the meantime, Sears has been remanded to the Bahamas Department of Corrections.

However, his lawyer Ian Cargill can seek bail before the Supreme Court.
