Cartwright earns conference honors

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) announced that Bahamian Denisha Cartwright, a junior athlete for the Minnesota State University at Mankato Mavericks, is the track athlete and newcomer of the year for the conference for the indoor season. The announcement was made on Wednesday.

Cartwright was brilliant all season, helping her team to a NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championship last weekend. It was her team’s first conference championship since 2017. She was the high point winner at the meet scoring a total of 28 points for her school. Cartwright earned two first place finishes and one second place finish.

With her performances throughout the season, the Bahamian has qualified in four events for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, set for March 11-13 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. She qualified in the 60 meters (m), the 200m, 60m hurdles and is a part of the 4x400m relay qualifying team.

Cartwright is ranked no lower than fifth in the individual events, and the relay team is also in the top five.

In the 60m hurdles, Cartwright has the top time in the nation at 8.41 seconds – a time she was able to produce this past weekend at the conference championships. In the 200m, she is ranked at number three in the national rankings with a time of 24.10 seconds. Again, she recorded that time at the conference championships. Her nationally number four ranked time of 7.52 seconds, in the 60m, was also done at the conference championships.

The 4x400m relay team of Cartwright, Nyeaee Robins, Mackenzie Keune and Mackenzie Woodard has the fifth-fastest time of 3:51.07. They ran that time at the Minnesota State University at Mankato Triangular Meet back on February 12.

Cartwright is one of 12 Mavericks athletes to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships.

The junior was named the USTFCCCA (United States Track Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association) NCAA Division II Indoor Track Athlete of the Week this season and is also a two-time NSIC Track Athlete of the Week. She finished first in all but one of her 60m hurdles events this season.

In addition to her earning those awards, her coach, Mike Turgeon, was the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.
