Baha Mar to recognize 25 ‘hometown heroes’

If there was ever a time for people to share a little kindness, it has been over the course of the past nine months – which have been absolutely unprecedented, chaotic at times, and terrifying to say the least – as thousands of people found themselves furloughed from jobs due to COVID-19 and floundering as to how they would put food on their tables, keep the utilities on, or even pay rent or mortgage without an income. In some instances, entire households were incomeless and left devastated.

As the pandemic unfolded, there were those people who stepped up by virtue of their jobs to help those in need, and others who recognized their fellow man was in dire straits, did what they could to assist a family member, neighbor, friend, and even a random stranger sharing of themselves what they could – whether large or small – in what have been inspiring acts of kindness.

Nurses and doctors were on the front line treating the ill to the detriment of themselves and their families; pastors went above and beyond for members of their congregations; teachers stepped up to command students on a platform that they too were new to while having to manage their own children; a neighbor realizing that both bread earners in the house next door were jobless, cooked meals to share with the family, then turned around to help the parents with necessary devices so their children could return to school on the virtual platform; others took the time to check on the elderly in the community knowing they could not leave their homes; some landlords reduced or waived tenant’s rent until they are again gainfully employed; then there’s the barber who set up shop under a tree to ensure the little boys running around his neighborhood remained groomed – free of charge; then there’s the person who prepared and gave out sanitation kits for free to anyone that needed it; and the people that showed up to feed frontline workers knowing they were overworked, understaffed and barely had time to find themselves a decent meal during the long hours they worked.

People that have been making an impact in your life and community during these difficult times are the people that Baha Mar wants to honor with a long weekend of recharging and relaxation.

Individual acts of kindness have been numerous and Baha Mar wants to highlight and celebrate these heroes who have positively impacted society.

The Baha Mar Resort Foundation will recognize 25 “Hometown Heroes” – an initiative developed to highlight and celebrate those people who have stepped up to support and assist others in challenging times in significant ways.

Members of the public are invited to nominate a “hometown hero” who has contributed to their well-being or the well-being of others in a selfless way via email with a short explanation as to why an individual is their “hometown hero”, along with the nominee’s photo and contact information to heroes@bahamar.com and tell Baha Mar Foundation officials why the nominee deserves a long weekend to recharge and relax at the Baha Mar resort.

Twenty-five winners will be invited to stay for three nights and receive a $350 resort credit.

Submissions will close on Friday, December 11. Winners will be announced on December 22, for stays from January 4-May 30.

As the Baha Mar resort prepares to reopen its doors on December 17, the resort’s leadership recognized the challenges many Bahamians faced over the last nine months – and that in many instances, family, friends and members of the community stepped up to support and assist others in challenging times in significant ways, and in appreciation of these special individuals came up with the “Hometown Hero” initiative.

“This pandemic has had an impact on many of us whether physically, mentally or financially; 2020 has created unprecedented challenges and as the year comes to an end, I think that it is important to reflect and have a moment of gratitude for those who have supported us along the way,” said Robert “Sandy” Sands, Baha Mar Resort Foundation chairman.

“I encourage everyone to send us their ‘hometown hero’ story and use the chance to give those special men and women some time away from the everyday, and allow us to take care of them.”
