Five homes destroyed in shantytown fire

Ten people were left homeless on December 26, after a fire destroyed five homes in a shantytown off Cowpen Road, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police Demeris Armbrister.

Armbrister said that around 12:17 p.m., the Royal Bahamas Police Force Fire Services Department was notified of a structural fire in the area.

He said firefighters arrived at the scene within 10 minutes.

“Upon our arrival, we met some five-plus homes totally engulfed in flames,” Armbrister told The Nassau Guardian at the scene.

“This fire was quickly brought under control and later extinguished.”

He said there were no reports of injuries.

Armbrister said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
