A couple of Bahamian collegiate basketball players, Radshad Davis and Franco Miller Jr., clashed this week with Davis and the Florida International University (FIU) Panthers taking down Miller and the Florida Golf Coast University (FGCU) Eagles, 85-69, at the Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Florida. Later Wednesday night, Kai Jones and his University of Texas Longhorns won their sixth game of the season, 79-63, over the Sam Houston State University Bearkats.
In the game with the two Bahamians, Davis poured in 16 points in the victory and Miller was scoreless. Jones finished with six points for the Longhorns in their game over at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
The Panthers’ forward was able to pull down eight rebounds and dish out one assist in the win. Miller was still able to grab three rebounds and added one steal.
The Panthers got its first two points on a layup by Davis who started a 10-2 run that began with 19:25 remaining in the first half. Davis’ only three pointer of the night, in four attempts, came with 4:10 remaining in the first half as he put his team up 39-26.
Miller, who finished the game 0-for-3 from the field, checked into the game with 13:55 left in the first half. He got his first assist of the night with a pass to Dakota Rivers who hit a three-pointer with 12:01 left to cut the Panthers lead to four, 18-14.
Miller’s first shot attempt was a three-pointer with 9:56 remaining.
By the end of the first half, the game was almost a foregone conclusion as the Panthers led by 17 points, 48-31. In the second half, the Panthers never let Miller and the Eagles cut the deficit to single digits.
Miller and the Eagles will be in action at home tonight when they take on the Webber International University Warriors in Fort Myers, Florida. Tip-off time is 7 p.m.
Davis, a senior forward, and the Panthers will play tomorrow in a home matchup for FIU against the Georgia Southern University Eagles. That game will take place at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center in Miami, Florida, and will get underway at 7 p.m.
In addition to his six points, Jones finished with four rebounds and one block in 21 minutes of play for the Longhorns. He went 3-for-6 from the field, all dunks, and missed his only free throw.
The Longhorns’ reserve checked into the game with 17:05 remaining in the first half. He got a block with 14:49 left in the first half. The Longhorns finished the first half up by 18, 44-26.
Jones’ first bucket came in the second half with 12:32 remaining in the game. He put his team up 60-38.
The Longhorns held on to the lead and now sport a 6-1 win/loss record on the season.
Next up for the Longhorns is a Big 12 home matchup against the Oklahoma State University Cowboys on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
