Offering fun and escapism, One Particular Harbour at Margaritaville Beach Resort at The Pointe opened yesterday with resort owners and managers hopeful that the addition to Nassau’s tourism product will really take off in 2021.
“We’re very excited about opening because we know the Margaritaville Resort is a very exciting new project,” said Larry Magor, general manager of the resort, developed on the waterfront with breathtaking views from every conceivable angle.
The development was entirely funded by China Construction America (CCA), a subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), which purchased the nearby British Colonial Hilton in 2014.
One Particular Harbour is the resort’s condo hotel, which has 129 units.
The Margaritaville hotel, which is expected to open at the end of the first quarter of 2021, has 155 rooms.
Speaking with The Nassau Guardian at the property on Sunday, Magor explained, “It doesn’t make a lot of sense for us to rush into it if there isn’t going to be the air traffic coming in here, if we don’t have the tourist business coming in here.
“Obviously, with both Atlantis and Baha Mar opening, they bring a lot to the table, so in terms of all the other properties opening, I think they’re more interested in how much business is going to come into New Providence.
“I think most importantly because it drives the traffic coming in from the US and if we don’t have enough airlift coming into The Bahamas, clearly it’s going to make it difficult for not only larger properties, but ourselves to be able to fill our rooms.”
The Pointe development, which is nearing full completion, also has a 40-slip marina, a parking garage, a water park and other amenities, including a spa, restaurants and movie theaters.
“The good news for us here is really One Particular Harbour is a condo unit, so we’re more interested right now in seeing sales volume in here,” Magor said.
“These units now, they’re prepped and ready to show, so people coming in to buy these units will see first hand what the property looks like and see the value of purchasing one of the units.”
According to Magor, the units are around 30 percent sold.
“There’s still a lot of pent up interest. A lot of people were really waiting to see the building complete, so now we’re in a position to show it off in its entirety,” he said.
“I would anticipate the sales volume increasing quite dramatically here, particularly when people see the facility and see how beautiful it is. It really is a little bit of a hidden gem until you actually look out from the windows and look at the views that you have. Every single unit in both properties looks at the water. We don’t have one bad view anywhere.
“It’s a remarkable facility that our owners, CCA, and Daniel [Lui, CCA’s senior vice president], have done an incredible job, taking a six-acre space and creating a world class resort out of it. I think people will be shocked when they see.”
So far, 100 workers have been hired, Magor said, and the developers anticipate hiring another 300 as business builds.
Asked about the significance of opening the property in a year fraught with challenges, Magor said, “I think it just goes to show the commitment of our owners, the commitment of Margaritaville as a brand; it goes to show the commitment of the team that has been here.
“The thing that I am most proud of is that 95 percent of our staff right now are Bahamian and that trend will continue when we open the hotel. The fact that we’ve been able to attract so many talented Bahamian staff here is the thing that makes this property even more exciting.”
Magor said the property actually benefited from so many talented Bahamians being available to work due to the unfortunate circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s unfortunate because circumstances really created a very positive journey for us because people were unemployed for months and months; we interviewed thousands of people for literally 400 jobs,” he said.
The staff are able to provide guests with a totally Bahamian experience, backed up by the high quality standards attached to the Margaritaville brand, according to the general manager.
Magor said, “Margaritaville is a brand that was founded on life in the Caribbean, so for us, what we’re proud of here is the fact that the brand is so approachable and it’s very important to us that we are considered to be the approachable brand when people come here. We want people to see these properties and see them as being a part of Bahamian culture.”
Service is priority, he added.
“We don’t sell a tangible product; we’re selling an experience, so what people experience here, that’s what they take away as a value; so for us, it’s vitally important,” Magor said.
“I think as important as service, it’s actually the friendliness of our staff and the fact that we have so many Bahamian people who really are letting our guests see what a true Bahamian experience is.”
In addition to One Particular Harbour’s condo units, JWB steakhouse is now open at The Pointe, promising an unforgettable dining experience.
As the resort puts it, you can’t have paradise without some heavenly dining options.
JWB steakhouse is open daily from 5 p.m. Guests are required to have their temperature checked upon entry.
