LPIA welcomes 12 flights since tourism sector reopening

In the first two days since the tourism sector officially reopened, Lynden Pindling International Airport has welcomed 12 flights into the country’s main gateway, LPIA’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications Jan Knowles confirmed yesterday.

While Knowles said she could not give specific passenger numbers until at least next week, the flight loads have been consistent with what has been coming in over the past few weeks.

“As it relates to airport operations on November 1, 2020, LPIA welcomed seven flights to Nassau from destinations including Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Toronto, Houston and Newark, New Jersey working with airline partners American Airlines, Jet Blue Airlines, United Airlines, Air Canada and Silver Airways,” she told Guardian Business.

“Today we welcomed five US flights from destinations including Miami, Ft. Lauderdale. Houston and Newark on American, Jet Blue and United Airlines.”

Although LPIA has been open continuously since July 1 when The Bahamas resumed welcoming international visitors, visitor arrivals remained subdued with total arrivals to New Providence declining to 7,899 in August – a significant drop from the 329,520 reported during August last year.

“Airport operations and passenger movements on Sunday and Monday were consistent with what LPIA has seen over the past few weeks and we do not anticipate any uptick in visitors this week or in the immediate future, given the upcoming United States presidential elections,” Knowles continued.

“The Ministry of Tourism (MOTA) has wisely not commenced any marketing campaigns to stimulate demand given all of the election advertising and noise. The MOTA plans to launch its marketing campaign in earnest following the elections and thereafter we hope to see the gradual uptick in visitors that would support the recovery of our tourism industry.”

Knowles said LPIA is typically not in a position to confirm passenger numbers until the 10th of the following month.
