Jones, Russian team remains unbeaten

It was a quiet but efficient night for Bahamian women’s professional basketball player Jonquel ‘JJ’ Jones as she poured in 13 points for UMMC Ekaterinburg, leading them to a comfortable 95-57 victory over MBA Moscow on Sunday night in Moscow, Russia. It was their fifth straight win in the Russian Women’s Basketball Premier League regular season, and they remained undefeated but are in second place in the standings. Dynamo Kursk sports an unblemished 6-0 win/loss record, earning the top spot in the standings.

Jones, a 6’ 6” post player, was one of five Ekaterinburg players to finish in double figures, as they used a balanced scoring attack to take down MBA Moscow on the road.

Jones, who plays for the Connecticut Sun in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) in the United States, went 5-for-7 from the field to shoot 71.4 percent in 17 minutes of play. She attempted one shot from deep but missed. The Holmes Rock, Grand Bahama native was perfect from the foul line as she went 3-for-3.

Jones was able to finish with seven boards, one assist and a blocked shot.

Leading the way for Ekaterinburg was WNBA player from Los Angeles Sparks Mariya Vadeeva with a double-double, scoring 26 points and grabbing 17 boards. Jones’ teammate and reigning WNBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) from the Seattle Storm, Breanna Stewart, also chipped in with a double-double, scoring 22 points and adding 12 rebounds.

Moscow’s Maria Krymova was the top-scorer on that side with 17 points and she added three rebounds and four assists.

It was Jones’ fourth game of the season and first since October 27. She is averaging 22 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per contest, and is shooting a blistering 61.5 percent from the field this season. She is averaging just over 25 minutes per game.

Just 55 seconds into their game on Sunday, Jones scored to put her team up 2-0. The home team was able to keep the game close in the first quarter, trailing just 22-19 after one.

The second quarter was a better quarter for the visitors as they settled in and had a better quarter offensively and defensively. They were able to outscore the home team 27-15 to take a convincing 49-34 lead into halftime.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as the lead was increased to 22 at the end of three, 68-46. The fourth quarter was all Ekaterinburg as they outscored their opponents, 26-11, to coast to victory.

Ekaterinburg took care of the ball as they only turned it over six times compared to Moscow’s 12 turnovers. They finished the game with 12 steals and four blocked shots. It was also an efficient night for them as they shot at a high clip of 52.8 percent from the field.

The Sun all-star power forward and her Russian team will look to make it six straight wins to start the season when they return to action at home against Yenisei Krasnoyarsk at 7 p.m. local time in Russia on Friday. The game will be played in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
