“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” – Jeremiah 33:3
A song of yesteryear that I really loved was Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway’s beautiful rendition of “You’ve Got A Friend” – “You just call out my name, and you know wherever I am I’ll come running, oh yeah baby to see you again. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is call and I’ll be there…”
We grew up in an era when our parents and forbears were loaded with wisdom phrases that became our chart and compass for life – “if you are hurting, holler” – “blood thicker than water.”
Once ago, there were different strokes for different folks, but the times in which we live have brought the whole world to the total and stark awareness of what COVID-19 is really about, and simple, yet very effective rules. I call it the 1-2-3 apply to all and sundry.
It is not a good feeling to always call someone and they never answer nor return your call. How many times constituents, especially, complain that the persons representing them never return when calls are made to them.
Our text from the Book of Jeremiah is giving us assurance that if we call out to God, He will not only answer, but reveal some things to you for your good.
Jeremiah was born in Anathoth, a village that was steeped under the cultural influence of Jerusalem. He was an intelligent youth, and the daily happenings in the capital paved the way for his interest in domestic and international politics , religiosity, and his decisive analysis and penetrating judgment of the state of the nation. Many times the burden was so heavy that he was referred to as the “weeping prophet.”
It was during the time of him being imprisoned, or during lockdown, that the word of the Lord came to him. “Moreover, the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying, thus saith the Lord the maker thereof, the Lord that formed it, to establish it, the Lord is His name; Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
“For thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; say that the houses of Jerusalem and the royal palace of Judah will be torn down as a result of the siege and the attack. Some will fight against the Babylonians, who will fill the houses with the corpses of those whom I am going to strike down in my anger and fury. I have turned against this city because of the evil things that they have done.
“But I will heal this city and its people and restore them to health. I will show them abundant peace and security. I will make Judah and Israel prosperous, and I will rebuild them as they were before. I will purify them from the sins that they have committed against Me, and I will forgive their sins and their rebellion. Jerusalem will be source of joy, honor and pride to Me; and every nation in the world will fear and tremble when they hear about the good things that I do for the people of Jerusalem and about the prosperity that I bring to the city.
The Lord said, “People are saying that this place is like a desert, that it has no people or animals living in it. And they are right: the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem are empty: no people or animals live there. But in these places, you will hear again the shouts of gladness and joy and the happy sounds of wedding feasts.
“You will hear people sing as they bring thank offerings to my temple, they will say, ‘Give thanks to the Lord Almighty, because He is good and His love is eternal.’ I will make this land as prosperous as it was before. I, the Lord have spoken.”
Father God, we thank you for the power of your word as you spoke to prophets in times past, the message to us remains the same. You will bless our land through the ravages of this pandemic. Our land will be restored and become so prosperous that it will be an amazement to the world. This will happen because we will call out to You and You will answer us, show us mighty things and heal our land.
Thy love divine hath led us in the past, in this free land by thee our lot is cast. Be thou our ruler, guardian and guide. And stay Thy word, our law, Thy paths our chosen way.
